Laundry

I’ve noticed a fascination with laundry in the photos of my recent photo walks. I’m aware that it’s a bit voyeuristic! I think these hanging clothes tell their stories so well…The number of them, the state they are in, are they for a family, or just for a single person? Sometimes a particular color scheme across a clothesline makes me cheerful or sad. I listen to the stories and make the snap.

Thoughts on Pescetarian Brutality

I find the Cantonese way of serving chicken, head proudly displayed on the plate, a great reality check. But going to the seafood market is a level-up. I get to see my dinner swimming, crawling, blinking right back at me. Then we take these sea monsters, flopping in a plastic bag, right across the road, to our favourite restaurant, where it becomes heavenly food. I am doing my job in this circle of life, and I am grateful.

Peng Chau is a tiny island in Hong Kong, but it has its own very special colour palette. It’s a treasure and I hope to spend many years capturing it.

Summer skies

Summer is hot and rainy here in Hong Kong. Instead of pounding the pavement for the next great street photography moment, I just take it easy, pull out my mobile, and take a bunch of shots at these amazing skies. The colors are unbelievable. The clouds add volume and texture. I just point and shoot. Life should be this simple.

Lantau Island

It’s lockdowns, work from home, home schooling regime in Hong Kong. This means that most of my photographic adventures need to happen in kind of a self isolation, out on hikes. It’s troubling but at the same time, I am happy I have my “way out” and can do my photo adventures even in these times.

This month I’ve decided not to showcase my current work, but look back at the archives from my trip to Ukraine, Kyiv, about 5 years ago. Can I just say this: I wish peace and freedom for our Ukrainian family and friends.

Sathorn District in Bangkok

Finally, after two and a half years at home, we are traveling. The first two weeks of our trip is in Bangkok. My photographic mission is to explore the small block just behind our apartment hotel, filled with interesting architecture, colours, and people. Some of these streets appear to be Chinese, and it’s an interesting mix of cultures, old and new, and I am loving it.

George Town in Penang - A Hidden Gem

Even though I have read about George Town in Penang that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I wasn’t really prepared for the beauty I’ve found there. It’s a mix of colonial architecture, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian style old buildings, wonderfully intact. I’d love to spend more time there and do a more comprehensive photo project about this hidden gem of a city.

Fun little side-project: making a photo set with 20-year-old throwaway digicams. The CCD sensor technology is said to have a more vibrant aesthetic compared to today’s CMOS sensors.

Autumn Fields of Nagano

My colleague Ryoichi took me around his hometown and the province of Nagano on a chilly but sunny Sunday afternoon. We visited a friend’s apple orchard and tasted the most amazing apples I’ve ever had. I also got to sample some exquisite grapes. The rice harvest was mostly completed everywhere, leaving bales of rice straw on the fields. We’ve waited for the Golden Hour at a nearby winery and used the setting sun’s light to make car beauty shots of Ryoichi’s Suzuki Jimny four-wheeler. What a perfect Sunday!

At The Jockey Club

Arthur, my Hong Kong colleague convinced our team to go to the Wednesday horse race at Happy Valley. I don’t have any particular interest in gambling, but it was worth going just to see and hear the horses running. They are a beautiful subject, but I have realised I am still more interested to observe and capture what the people are doing at the race track.

Christmas in Asia

Christmas feels different in Asia. It’s still sunny and warm here: everything is green. The Christmas installations at malls, sometimes lavish, sometimes limited by their budgets, inspire shopping and selfie-making for about two months. Then they get promptly replaced by the Lunar New Year decorations. Still, kids love Christmas the same way everywhere: school and other club performances and the countdown to the magic of opening presents. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
