Metro 2021 Redux

I tried to recreate a photo I made of Aniko and our dog, Alka, in an underground exit. Realism is very hard, but I feel like I’m getting there. Also, I’m using a render farm now because my old laptop almost caught fire and I don’t want to sell my kidney for a GPU.

Summer Deserting

“Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife - chopping off what’s incomplete and saying: ‘Now, it’s complete because it’s ended here.’” There are no mistakes, only happy accidents. I hope. This project started off as an animation but sadly only one image made the cut until the deadline. I reached a point where I can’t really see what I’m doing up until the point I rendered the whole thing and it’s 47 hours later. :D

I figured that I suck at environments - among other thing - so I’m taking an environment modeling and composition class. This is one of the results.

This month we started a new DnD campaign and we decided to design, print and then handpaint our new characters. Mine is Torinn Verthisathurgiesh the dragonborn Warlock with severe ocd.

Hand painted halloween horns

We played a Halloween one-shot rpg with my friends and decided to dress up as the tiefling investigator I was playing. For this, I needed some horns. So I had them 3D printed and then I hand painted them till they looked a little more hellish.

First snow of the year

Last minute submission, I didn’t have the time to do this properly. Fortunately when I was doing some preliminary renders with my shiny new Cycles X, Aniko told me that the low res version looks cool. I hastily agreed then animated it, downsampled and made a gif from the render. Let’s see if we can properly show gifs here. :)

DIY Dice Tray

I made a dice tray for aniko for Christmas from reclaimed wood. The project took a couple of days from conception to realization. It’s the first ever time I used a chisel too.

Running on a field

I’ve been experimenting with Blender 3.0 geometry nodes. This is an animation I rendered yesterday. The vegetation is procedurally generated on a noisemap-displaced plain, all of it is geometry nodes. I had a camera focus glitch at the end which was not intentional but I left it there because I felt it was good. I was also thinking about adding some camera shake using Ian Hubert’s shakify plugin… but I haven’t yet figured out how to bake the shake into the animation in order for my render farm to be able to use it.

Scanning the Mood Octopus

This month I took a bunch of photos from our Mood Octopus and used RealityCapture to stitch together the images into a passable 3D model. Then I cleaned it up and started working on a scene with the little (now big) guy for next month’s Realm submission. I have to clean it up a little further and fix whatever’s happening with its hair simulation (yeah, since it’s a plush toy, I decided to generate some fur on the little fella). Added some camera shake and panting and “tada”, here’s a strange dramatic scene.

Render for Fun

Made this render for our upcoming home product for fun - creating visualizations is not part of my job so it’s always fun to do something completely different.
